Emily M. De Falla
Collaborative Attorney and Mediator
I believe families don’t belong in court, so I help couples resolve disputes peacefully, with respect and dignity without resorting to litigation.
I became an attorney in 1988. In 1991 I opened my own Family Law practice.
During decades in court handling contested custody, support, and property cases, I saw first-hand how divorce litigation takes a great toll on a family. Fear and anger make it hard for normally reasonable people to compromise. The children are under great stress. Even when one side “wins,” both sides come away emotionally damaged.
My search for alternatives to litigation led me to Collaborative Practice and Mediation. I am grateful to have these real tools to help families reduce the tension and conflict of a divorce.
I have served on the Board of Directors of Collaborative Practice California and was a 2020 recipient of CP Cal’s Eureka Award. I am also a member of Collaborative Practice East Bay, the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, Bay Area Integrative Mediation, and the Academy of Professional Family Mediators. I also serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the ADR Section of the Contra Costa Bar Association and I served for six years as the president of the Board of Ombudsman of Services of Contra Costa, Solano, and Alameda, a dispute resolution service for residents of long term care facilities.
I work with families throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the state of California, and internationally, often with the use of video conferencing.
